та патриотическая песня была любима южными солдатами наравне с "Дикси". Положенная на народную ирландскую мелодию  "The Irish Jaunting Car", она в живописных деталях описывает порядок отделения штатов Конфедерации от Союза. Премьера "Заветного синего флага", слова к которой написал поэт Гарри Маккарти,  состоялась в Джексоне, штат Миссисипи, весной 1861 года, но настоящий успех к ней пришел в сентябре того же года в Новом Орлеане, когда песня была исполнена перед солдатами, уходящими на Вирджинский фронт. "Заветный синий флаг" можно с уверенностью назвать первым хитом Войны за независимость Юга, популярным настолько, что оккупировавший Новый Орлеан федеральный генерал Батлер арестовал местного издателя этой песни.
